The designer of this plan above wanted to build a firewood rack just the right size for 1/2 rick of wood, and he did a great job. As he describes it, it was made using six(!) 2×4's, three cedar fence pickets and about $5 worth of screws and nails, for a total cost of around $30 (including all wood, blocks & screws!!).
This will orient any wood movement in the end inserts to coincide with the wood movement of the box sides and away from putting pressure on the box mitres. Once you have the end inserts cut to exact size, trim off the ½" radius on their top two corners. These are to make it easy to put the lid on the box.

How to Build a Firewood Shelter. 1 Build the Frame. Butt the edges of the front posts together in pairs to form the corner posts. Drill 1⁄8"-dia. pilot holes at 8" intervals.
